What is Rimonabant?
Rimonabant (also known as SR141716, Acomplia, Bethin, Riobant, Slimona, Rimoslim, and Zimulti) is an anorectic anti-obesity drug. Its main avenue of effect is reduction in appetite. Rimonabant works by blocking the CB1 receptor, one of two receptors found in our body's physiological system called the Endocannabinoid System (EC System). Rimonabant may also be found to be effective in assisting some smokers to quit smoking.
Rimonabant is the first selective CB1 receptor blocker to be approved for use anywhere in the world. In the UK, it has been available since the end of July 2006. As of 2007, the drug was available in 38 countries. Now - May 2008 - Rimonabant has been approved for prescribing in 56 countries..
How does Rimonabant work?
Rimonabant switches off the same brain circuits that make people hungry when they smoke cannabis.
Rimonabant acts by selectively blocking CB1 receptors found in the brain and in peripheral organs important in glucose and lipid (or fat) metabolism, including adipose tissue, the liver, gastrointestinal tract and muscle.
CB1 receptor blockade with Rimonabant acts to decrease the overactivity of the endocannabinoid system (EC system). The EC system is a recently characterised physiological system that includes receptors such as the CB1 receptor and it has been shown to play an important role in regulating body weight and in controlling energy balance, as well as glucose and lipid (or fat) metabolism.
So when you take this rimonabant drug, you will automatically eat less because you do not feel hunger. As a result you will take less food which helps you to reduce your cholesterol levels. When you start losing weight, the first place you will lose body fat is your mid-section. And your cholesterol will go down and your blood pressure will return to healthy levels.
How to take Rimonabant
Rimonabant should be taken once a day, before breakfast. The normally recommended Rimonabant dosage is 20mg which should be swallowed with a full glass of water.
